It's great to have you here in this final review course in your HIT Program!

Throughout your HIT courses, you have been learning about health information management and technology. Now it's time to put all of the knowledge to work. The intended purpose of this course is to assist you in being successful in passing your national RHIT exam as well as being successful in the workforce as a credentialed professional. You will have exams throughout this course (some for practice, some for grades). It is imperative that you utilize the practice tests every week as a learning tool.

Please know that there is no way to memorize all the information in the HIT curriculum that you have completed or are close to completing. You will need to be familiar with terms and concepts because the national exam is far from a direct recall exam. It is more an analytical exam testing your knowledge of the HIT curriculum.

This course has lectures located under the Course Home tab from previous courses and an audio review of each domain in Doc Sharing. Utilize all the resources you have to help you understand this information.

As you take the weekly practice exams, you will want to make notes regarding topics in which you second guess yourself because these exams are similar to what you will be seeing on the national exam. The practice tests are graded but they are not calculated into your overall average. The practice tests are designed to prepare you for the domain Exams. The practice tests are auto-graded but they will not provide you with the correct answers once you attempt them. This is why you are strongly encouraged to have the RHIT/RHIA PRG study guide, or the AHIMA RHIT study guide.

Each practice test consists of 25 multiple choice questions, and you should pass each of the six subject area tests with a grade of 70% or better. You are able to take the practice tests multiple times; you will not, however, be able to see correct answers in the practice tests. You will be able to see your score but not the answers. This is to ensure that you are improving your test-taking abilities as well as focusing on domain areas in which you are weak.

You are still required to post to the Discussion in the same manner as you would any other course (one time on 3 different days, with your first post by Wednesday).

The mock final exam consists of 125 multiple choice questions, which is similar to the RHIT exam, though the RHIT exam has 150 total questions (of which 130 are graded).

In Week 8, you must complete the RHIT final exam by 11:59 p.m. MT Thursday.

Please mark your calendar for Weeks 2–7 to be sure that you complete the domain exams. Don’t wait until the last minute! If you have any technical issues, contact the Help Desk (800-594-2402) and be sure to get a ticket number.

Resources

  1. Read the AHIMA Candidate Handbook for the Certification Examination on the AHIMA website.
  2. What is essential for this class—and even more importantly to pass the RHIT exam—is the Johns/Sayles textbook (Health Information Technology: An Applied Approach) and an RHIT review guide. This class is a preparation class to help you understand what the RHIT exam is going to be like. The contents section of the textbook is broken down into the domains that the RHIT exam is based on.
  3. Sample Study Schedule

Week 1—Health Data Contents and Standards, Information Retention and Access, Classification System, and Secondary Data Sources

Week 2—Information Retention and Access, Legal and Ethical, Health Information Privacy and Security

Week 3—Health Statistics and Research, CPT and ICD Coding

Week 4—Billing and Reimbursement and Medical Science
Week 5—Quality and Performance Improvement
Week 6—Organization and Management and Human Resources

Week 7—Organization and Work Planning

The RHIT exam consists of Domain 1 (Data Content, Structure and Standards, Information Governance); Domain 2 (Information Protection Access, Disclosure, Archival, Privacy and Security); Domain 3 (Informatics, Analytics and Data Use); Domain 4 (Revenue Management); Domain 5 (Compliance); and Domain 6 (Leadership); for a total of 150 questions at 100%. Also, it cannot be stressed enough how important it is to get your discussion points; they may be what gets you a pass or a fail in this course.

Study Tips

As you know, your RHIT certification is the first step to a successful career, and it is critical for your future employment.

Simply passing each class is not a guarantee that you will pass the exam. There are many ways to study, such as online flashcards, a study partner, seminars, periodical literature reviews in the health field, and (most importantly) read and study each chapter in your textbooks. The test questions can come from a variety of sources, not just your textbooks.

The key to success, at least in this course, is to develop a study schedule. You should plan on spending an average of 10 to 15 hours per week studying. You cannot simply expect to pass the exams without a great amount of studying and effort; this certification is earned.

It is our hope that this course will prepare you to pass the RHIT certification exam on the first try.

Thank you for your hard work and discipline. We wish you the best of luck in your studies and look forward to seeing you succeed in the future!
