Anaphylaxis is a severe, life-threatening, systemic hypersensitivity reaction resulting in decreased blood pressure (cardiovascular collapse), airway obstruction (respiratory failure), and severe hypoxia (tissue injury resulting in cellular death due to hypoxia leading to hypoxemia, cellular ischemia, injury and infarction/death). Commonly caused by exposure to latex materials such as gloves, insect stings, ingestion of nuts or shellfish, administration of penicillin, or local anesthetic injections, the reaction usually occurs within minutes of the exposure.
